Spending time with family is one of the best parts of our retirement years. Building lifelong memories and growing our relationships is certainly its own reward. But when we combine those connections with volunteering, we can be sure that we’re not only enjoying those moments, but helping to better the world and our communities. Let’s take a look at some options for giving back while getting to spend time with the people we love.
Habitat for Humanity
Creating affordable housing is one of the greatest needs facing America today. According to recent statistics, 46 million individuals live in poverty in the US, and over 11 million people pay half their monthly salary in rent. As a result, there is not a single county in the country that can meet 100% of its low-income population’s need for safe and affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity seeks to change that by allowing new homeowners to build new houses, all while being aided by volunteers. You and your family can be of great help by picking up a hammer or screwdriver and contributing to the cause.
Boys and Girls Clubs of America
Providing mentoring for kids of all ages is a huge help, and one great organization for this cause is the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. According to organization statistics, 97% of Club teens expect to graduate from high school. As opposed to other groups that pair you individually with young ones, this agency allows you to work in groups to teach and inspire kids. That means that there are lots of benefits for your children to get involved and mentor at the same time.
Local Food Banks
Sometimes it’s important to think globally, but act locally. Your community undoubtedly has people in need, and the local food banks do great work to serve those closest. When you and your loved ones plan to volunteer at a food bank, you will be aiding in collecting items, tracking the supply, and distributing goods to those in need. Even if you’re not able to do heavy lifting, there are tons of options that don’t require intense physical labor, like administrative work or outreach. To get started in your community, check out this tool for finding local food banks.
