Did you know you can sell all or a portion of a life insurance policy, even term insurance?

The holiday season is a time we associate with family visits and gatherings. However, for many reasons, senior citizens may find themselves alone on holidays. Whether it’s due to distance, a mobility issue, or troubles with travel, there are some important tips for retirees who plan on being alone during these times.
Stock Up on Food and Supplies
Before the holiday season hits, it’s important to make sure you have everything you could need at home. This would include adequate food and household supplies, but also things like potable drinking water. It’s possible for pipes to freeze during the colder months, so it’s a good idea to have bottled water on hand. Additionally, items like batteries, flashlights, and candles are a smart buy in case of a power outage due to a winter storm. And don’t forget to make sure any necessary prescriptions are filled! It might be difficult to get an appointment with a doctor during the holiday season, so be sure to get any medical appointments out of the way.
Seniors Should Facetime with Family
Loneliness can be a traumatic and upsetting feeling. Senior citizen statistics show that 43% of elderly individuals report feeling isolated and alone on a regular basis. While you may not be able to be there in person, you can still keep up with your loved ones through video chat. If you have a smartphone, it’s as easy as making a Facetime call or Facebook video chat request. Ask your family to get together so you can see them all at once, as well as to request they make time to have a lengthy call.
Have a Friend or Neighbor Check In
Though your family may not be able to show up at your home, it’s a good idea to explain your situation to a friend or nearby neighbors and simply ask they drop by a few times over the week to check in. Not only will they be able to confirm you’re still in perfectly fine health, but this can help to combat the feelings of isolation or loneliness. Ask them to stay a while and have some tea, play a board game, or just vent about their own holiday stresses.
Make Sure to Have a List of All Important Phone Numbers
If there is an emergency, the last thing you want to do is be searching for contact information. Before the holidays, sit down and think of anyone you might need to contact. This could include phone numbers for your doctors, pharmacies, neighbors, family, and friends, as well as emergency numbers for things like snow plowing, electricians, plumbers, or roofers. It’s never fun to think of the worst possible scenario, but it’s a better bet to have this info on hand in case something does happen.
Holidays spent alone can feel isolating. However, as long as you’re checking in with others and planning for any stretch of time on your own, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. That being said, if the reason you’re unable to travel and be with family is due to financial constraints, selling a life insurance policy may be a great way to stretch your holiday budget.
